A Resilient, Modular School for Nepal
This school for Karmayog Foundation is designed to be safe, affordable, and rooted in the local context of Nepal. The design reflects the foundation’s commitment to building strong, self-reliant communities through practical, sustainable solutions. The form of the school takes inspiration from traditional Nepali architecture—especially the roofs and slanting walls seen in historic temples like Pashupatinath. These forms are reinterpreted to meet modern needs while respecting local culture. The building sits comfortably within the mountain landscape, echoing its slopes without standing out. The inverted sloping roofs and angled walls are not only symbolic but highly functional. The roof deflects rainwater and landslide debris, reducing pressure on the structure. The compact, closed geometry improves earthquake and wind resistance by spreading forces evenly across the building. This shape also keeps the structure stable and safe in extreme conditions. Each classroom sits on a raised, sloped earthen plinth. This plinth acts like a shock absorber during earthquakes and protects the building from floods and moisture. It also creates usable outdoor platforms for gathering, learning, or play. The school is built using a modular system, with bamboo components, corrugated roofing sheets, and dry joinery. These parts are lightweight, repeatable, and easy to assemble by hand, making the construction process simple and cost-effective. Materials are sourced locally, supporting artisans and reducing environmental impact. Walls and roofs are structural—they add stiffness and support. The structure is easy to maintain. Any damaged piece can be replaced without affecting the rest of the building. This ensures the school stays usable over time, even in remote areas with limited resources. The layout includes shared courtyards and shaded walkways, creating spaces for students, teachers, and families to interact. These areas support not just education, but also a sense of belonging and community. This school is designed to grow with the community, using local knowledge, materials, and skills. It is a practical and respectful response to Nepal’s environment—safe, adaptable, and grounded in the values of Karmayog Foundation.
