Bocca Cafe, Odisha
Project Typology: Hospitality
Area: 100 sq. m
Status: Built | July 2021
The café lies in the vicinity of the Government Craft Museum, “Kala Bhoomi” in Bhubaneswar. The Craft Museum is located on a large open ground, with open and semi open spaces within itself. The design intervention in the café, required, to design weather shed, over 3 existing open seating’s. The seating’s were casted in site in laterite with granite top.
The shed was designed with careful consideration to harmonize with the existing aesthetics of the museum, which features a strong vernacular character. At the same time, the design aligns with the contemporary brand identity of our client, Bocca Café, which already has a presence in the city with other branches known for their modern visual appeal. The café aimed to establish itself as a vibrant hangout spot, catering to the aspirations and experiences of a youthful demographic aged between 20 to 35 years. The design also responded sensitively to the existing in-built furniture on site, characterized by laterite stone bases and granite tops. Structurally, the shed was conceived to draw support from both the existing kitchen shed and the built-in stone furniture, ensuring an integrated and contextually grounded solution.
As a design decision, the simplest form was worked upon with locally available solid bamboos (mix of D.Strictus & Nutans), to create a cozy yet semi open private space at each table. Taking support from the base of existing benches & table. Thus creating 3 spherical pods which further acts as a stable structure to support and give shape to the roof above.
